What a SITEMAP.xml Will do for Your Website

Let’s start from the beginning. A sitemap is a page in your website that summarizes the different areas you have on your website. More or less it is a list of all the pages on your website. Although easy to create, you can generate one for FREE online, just visit: XML-Sitemaps. After you have your sitemap generated you just have to drop it the top folder of your website.

Now, why is this important to your website? “Google uses your Sitemap to learn about the structure of your site and to increase our coverage of your webpages.”- Google Webmasters. This basically means with the sitemap spiders/bots that search the internet for content have a reason, order and frequency in which to search your site, boosting your search engine results.

Finally, do you need a sitemap for your website? For all bloggers who blog at least once a month- for sure. The sitemap allows all the complex links of bloggers to be easily searched by the spiders/bots. In addition if you have a website that is updated on a regular basis a sitemap is beneficial. The sitemap will let the spiders/bots know that this page will be updated and they will need to update their content too. If you have a site that is going to be staying mostly the same you can skip the sitemap but it still wouldn’t hurt to have one.

Sitemaps are great. I submitted mine to Yahoo and received immediate results.

For sure! Don’t forget Google too. Even Bing has a place for you to submit to.
